Grant of SEK 8.4 million for Swedish Lapland

The regional tourist organisation, Swedish Lapland Tourism, has received a grant of SEK 8.4 million from the EU regional development fund for the years 2009 and 2010 for a project aimed at marketing tourism in the Swedish Lapland region to guests from Sweden and abroad.

The project is co-funded to the same amount by Norrbotten County Administrative Board, Norrbotten County Council and the Municipality of Skellefteå. The project covers three different areas: marketing, spreading information and lobbying.

The experience industry (including tourism) is a priority area under the regional growth programme for the county, and the long-term aim is to increase growth and profitability in this industry.

“Those of us who work in the tourist industry in the region are very pleased that we’ve been awarded EU funds to strengthen tourism in the region and increase the number of tourists who can share the fantastic experiences we offer. Our attractions include spectacular countryside, the midnight sun, northern lights, real mountains and a beautiful coastline, as well as fascinating culture for visitors to share from far and wide. Interest in Swedish Lapland grew considerably in the first months of the year, with several new UK tour operators visiting us so that they can sell our experience holidays to the British, which is encouraging. Swedish Lapland has also recently been named as the most successful winter destination in the world out of 700 different destinations. Those who are interested can get a foretaste of Swedish Lapland at the Wilderness Fair in Stockholm on 13–15 March,” says Jan-Erik Jaensson, CEO of Swedish Lapland
