The Silver Museum
Einar Wallquist, creator of the Silver museum, came to Arjeplog as a young doctor in the early 1920s. He was captivated by the place, the culture and the people and started collecting items to document the rich culture of Arjeplog. Here is a selection from the exhibits at the museum:
The Silver Hall
is the "treasury" of the museum. The Sami made silver pieces glimmers brightly against the blue background - riches and prosperity in the form of collars, belts, cups, spoons and jewllery. The splendid silver collars are the crowns of the exhibit, which contains close to 700 separate items. It is the largest collection of it's kind.
Mujttalus
is a Sami expression for "from memory". The exhibit Mujttalus contains items from the Sami everyday life - clothing and items made from natural materials, shaped for daily use.
Tracks
The prehistoric exhibit covers thousands of years of development. Here we have tales of life, insights and experiences from the hunters and fishermen who came to Arjeplog after the Inland ice moved away.
Settlers
Hunting and fishing, as well as farming and forestry have always been important to the peole of Arjeplog. The settlers exhibit consists of recreated settings with these industries in mind.
