The best of Kukkolaforsen
Torne Valley is an old district where agriculture and farming are important industries. Torne River is the richest of the Baltic salmon rivers. Fishing for whitefish is almost as important as salmon catching. We walk through the enriching cultural environment.
A guide demonstrates how to catch whitefish with long handeled bagnets. The bag net must be in the bottom of the pit and along the bottom. An old fisherman demonstrates and talks about the centuries-old físhing traditions. He talks about the importance of the fishing in the old days. How fishing sites were auctioned, and how the common catch is divided among the villagers in a peculiar method.
We have a Fishing museum and two mills from the 1800´s century, fishing huts, sawmill and a blacksmith. The museum depicts Tornedalens rich agricultural and fishing culture. Tornedalens geology provides a solid foundation for an outstanding production of salmon, whitefish and other fish. This gave the conditions for a good life for the people that has lived in the Torne Valley for centuries.
So it's time to plan the next big adventure. Over a cup of coffee, we get a lesson in rafting. Then we move away to the starting place. Foam whirls around the boat when we bob up in the high waves. Kukkolaforsen is one of the nation's largest waterfalls, 13 meter high and 2,5 km long
After the thrilling experience on the rapids we recover in Kukkolaforsen VIP sauna. A sauna should be a sensual pleasure and a refreshment for the soul. Through the windows we see the mighty rapids incessant stream pass by on it´s way to the sea.
