Ski Tours in Muddus

Fairytale skiing in Swedish Lapland.

“All of a sudden a tree shakes violently, the snow explodes all around and a few meters in front of us we see a huge woodland grouse (capercaillie) flying up from the snow. With our hearts racing we carry on through this wonderful landscape, then the silence return”

On this ski tour, we travel on wooden cross country skis, over the deep powdery snow. We will ski through the Southern parts ofMuddusNational Parkand travel between 5 and12 kilometresper day. Most of the skiing will be on virgin snow and the distance travelled will depend on the depth of the snow and the weather conditions.

Muddus is ”untouched” and an ancient pine forest. We are lucky here in the province of Jokkmokk, as we still have area of this ageing forest left – the oldest trees are around 500 years old with some even older in parts of Muddus. Most of the time we travel in total silence. One of the great phenomena of skiing in deep snow is the exhilarating contrast between the peace your environment brings to you and the demand placed on your body by the physical effort.

Night time tours are possible depending on the availability and brightness of the moonlight. We may even experience skiing under the Northern Lights, if we are lucky. The coldness of the winter days must be taken into account, although at the same time, much colder days produce an incredible daylight and starlit nightime. If we are fortunate, we may see lots of animal tracks along the way. The story of ”life in the forest” that the tracks show us becomes our adventure.
